Each quarter we feature a new Women in Business success story.  This quarter we are pleased to present Kathy Finlan.  She is the proprietor of Bella Hair Salon and Boutique located at 488 Albany-Shaker Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

Here is her story.....

"I am a 1997 graduate of The Orlo School of Hair Design.  After graduation, I worked in a franchise salon in Colonie for two years. During my time there I was able to become a Farouk Color Scholar while learning much about the business and what it would take to become a success in my career.

I then left the salon in Colonie to work for myself.  I spent the next four years renting a booth in an independent salon in Loudonville.  There I started to build my client base and continued to learn the ins and outs of being your own boss.  I also studied Goldwell and Wella color.  Since starting in the business, I always knew I wanted to own my own salon.  After the fourth year I was really looking for that opportunity and preferred staying in Loudonville where the atmosphere is professional, inviting and friendly.  That's when I left to work at a new salon, Bella Boutique, with the knowledge that this salon would be available for purchase within two years of me starting.  That permitted me to obtain my own salon in the location I wanted and within the time frame I had planned.

I am a mother of two boys ages 3 and 20 months, I also have two stepchildren ages 13 an 11.  I never could have done most of this without the love and support of my wonderful husband.  His encouragement, along with his continued belief in me, has always meant more than words could ever express.  I take just as much pride and devotion in my family and home as I do my business.  It can sometimes get very crazy between cleaning the house, changing diapers, daycare, sports, every day life in general and then, lets not forget the salon!  I work a minimum of 40 hours or more per week, reserving weekends for my family.

I also have two God sent friends, one is my receptionist.  She not only does a fantastic job, but she does it for free!  She knew how hard it was going to be fore me just starting my own business and wanted to help.  Janet has brought so much wisdom and love into my life.

My other friend faithfully cleans the salon for me every other week, also for free.  I am very lucky and blessed to have such great support!"

     1.  Kathy, when did you realize you wanted to OWN your own business rather than    work for someone else?

I always knew I wanted to own my own business.  I started out working for myself with a cleaning business while going to beauty school.  During a short period of time, I worked for a salon.  Once I learned more about the business I was ready to go on my own with my own clients.  At that time, I was renting a booth and building my clientèle.  Soon enough the opportunity to buy a salon came and I went for it.

    2.  Were you scared?

Yes.  Of course.  Looking back I think I was also a bit naive so maybe not as scared as I should have been!!!

    3.  Did you encounter any fall backs?

Yes, not heeding the advice of keeping my expenses low.  I really wanted to make my salon look great and that can catch up with you quickly if business is slow.  I was able to overcome it with hard work but it's never EASY.

    4.  When it all came together, how did you feel?

     Very excited and very proud.

    5.  What are some of the hardest things about owning your own business?

Dealing with all the problems and little things that must be dealt with on a day to day basis.

     6.  Do you have any regrets?

I wish I started with more of a cash reserve to help smooth over and get through the slow times.

7.  What advice would you give other women who want to begin their own business?

Don't be afraid to go for it BUT, listen to your inner voice telling you to be cautious.  Make sure to be thorough and go over every detail yourself.  Be sure to understand EVERY aspect of the business.  Also, Don't be afraid to ask someone else who is successful for advice.

8.  What resources did you use to accumulate information on where to get funding, equipment etc.?

I used the  New York State Business Council and Google web sites.

9.  Would you like to leave this interview with words of wisdom or a great quote?

Being my own boss gives me a sense of freedom to control my own destiny.  Operating and running every aspect of MY business on the other hand, can be both a burden and a blessing.  I am able to control my work environment and make my salon the best available, yet I have to worry about every expense of keeping the business thriving.  I believe one of the most important attributes I possess in achieving success is my ability to keep control of the present expenditures, watch the marketplace and of course our economy.  While looking toward the future when this salon will run self sufficiently and even more profitable then it is today.  I know the hard work will pay off.  This salon is really a dream come true!!!

SEABG wish to thank Kathy for her contribution to Women in Business and her insights into running your own successful enterprise.
